If you enjoy pwnapples, we’ve got more good news for you today. PwnageTool was updated toversion 5.1.1, along with the iPhone Dev Team’s entire suite of free jailbreak software. Version 5.1.1 allows Mac users to create pre-jailbroken custom firmware based on iOS 5.1.1 and the Rocky-Racoon untethered jailbreak. (Windows users can create custom firmware with RedSn0w.)
The main draw of software like PwnageTool is for unlockers. If you rely on UltraSn0w or a commercial method to unlock your phone that relies on certain exploits in your phone’s baseband firmware, you need to use software such as PwnageTool or RedSn0w to preserve the old baseband firmware. If your unlock requires a certain baseband and you update to an unmodified version of iOS 5.1.1, the baseband will be updated and your unlock will be gone. The method for preserving your baseband in PwnageTool 5.1.1 should be similar to the method we covered for 5.0.1. We will have an updated guide available shortly for iOS 5.1.1.
Another great feature of the new PwnageTool is that it can jailbreak the Apple TV 2 running 5.0_2B206f (the Apple TV equivalent of iOS 5.1.1). This means if you have a Mac you do not need to install Seas0nPass, instead you can use the same PwnageTool you use for jailbreaking your phone.
The only real downside to PwnageTool 5.1.1 is that it only runs on A4 devices and prior. This means it can’t be used to preserve the baseband for the iPhone 4S or the second and third generation iPads. This isn’t PwnageTool’s fault, as the exploits required aren’t currently known for the newer A5 devices.
You can download PwnageTool 5.1.1 from the link below. You can also donate to the developers of the underlying Rocky-Racoon jailbreak from the Dev Team’s website.
