According to Apple Insider, Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets (who covers IT Hardware, Networking & Tech Supply Chain industry at Topeka Capital Markets) spoke with his supply chainsources who informed him that Apple was going to launch new products in September (and not in October, as the previous rumors suggest). This launch would include the next-generation iPhone as well as a smaller “7.85 inch” iPad with the same 1024 by 768 resolution of the older iPads.

I find it a bit odd that Apple would be pursuing two different methods for keeping the resolution compatible with previous hardware. On the leaked iPhone hardware we’ve seen previously, the screen maintains the same width and pixel density of iPhone 4S but increases the height of the screen by half an inch. On the rumored iPad Mini, the pixel density is changed but the resolution is fixed from the previous iPads. These two schemes would pose different challenges for designing app interfaces across Apple’s devices.
It would also be unusual for Apple to release two new iOS devices in the same month. Apple seems to strategically spread out the releases of its iOS devices throughout the year. The only release overlaps I’ve noticed happen with the Apple TV, which isn’t currently one of Apple’s flagship devices and may benefit from the attention to Apple’s more popular products. This is only speculation based on past behavior, though. As always Apple could do anything, so I’m taking this rumor with a grain of salt.
